Tips to Grow Happy Healthy Trees, Plants & Shrubs
Selection
It is best practice to select trees, ornamental plants and shrubs that naturally thrive in your property's conditions. This practice creates a "low maintenance" landscape and allows for the least amount of effort, chemical use, and stress on the plants without sacrificing quality.
Stabilizing
Using wooden poles or sticks as added support helps stabilize fragile branches and enables plant growth and health.
Fertilizing
Fertilization is one of the most important parts of plant, shrub and lawn care. There are many different types of fertilizers on the market. Fertilizers should not only be based on cost but also on existing soil conditions, the type of plant being fertilized and the expected growth response. The amount of fertilization needed varies depending on soil health, plant type and age, and weather elements.
Watering
Keeping trees and plants at the correct hydration level is critical for health. Plants and shrubs require different amounts of water depending on their nature, location, soil, and even the time of year. Wilting or a pale greyish-green color are usually indications that a plant or shrub needs watering. Overwatering limits the air supply resulting in the asphyxiation of a plant.
If possible, the best time to water plants or shrubs is early morning to prevent moisture evaporation but also assure a dry lawn overnight. Figuring out which of your greenery needs more or less water will save you time, money and water!
Mulching
There are multiple reasons why using Mulches around your plants and shrubs can be beneficial. They act as plant insulation and come in a variety of options. Also, they keep moisture in the soil, prevent weed growth, and deter fungus and disease growth.
Pruning
Pruning is more than just about creating a beautiful looking plant or shrub for your landscape; it takes skill and keeps greenery in optimal health!
Have you ever heard the expression…"there are two ways to trim a tree". Well there are also two ways to trim a shrub. Heading, is the random removal of branches from a plant or shrub. Thinning, is the intentional or selective removal of branches to thin the plant or shrub. Performing pruning to your plants and shrubs helps to protect it from dead or diseased pieces, allowing for new blooms.
Spring
Extensive/aggressive pruning begins in the early spring when growth begins.
We recommend server or hard pruning only take place in early spring or fall.
Summer
Pruning should be avoided in hot temperatures, usually over 85.
Fall
Avoid pruning during the late fall and early winter to discourage growth not ready for winter.

Weed Control
Weeds can be controlled by hand, through the use of mulch and chemicals. The exact method will vary depending on the property conditions.

Insect Control
Plants and shrubs are susceptible to a variety of insects, fungus and disease. One of the best defenses is to keep plants and shrubs as healthy as possible. Our IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program helps to monitor plants regularly to catch any problems that may arise early. Not all insects are worrisome, a correct diagnosis before any chemical treatment is critical not only for the plant, tree or shrub but also for the environment.
